My Students

Our school is 65% free and reduced lunch, most of my students are English language learners and live in an urban community. Our intellectually disabled moderate class is comprised of 16 students with eligibilities such as Autism, Other Health Impairments, and Intellectual Disabilities. My students come to school each day with the love for learning and are always happy, kind, and want to be the best versions of themselves.

The alternative curriculum which is based on the premise that every student no matter how severe his or her disability is capable of living, working, and recreating in the community as a successful citizen.

We focus on engaging students in constructive and personal leisure activities in school, home, and the community. We focus on increasing the likelihood of our students functioning as contributing adults within our society and increase opportunities of obtaining employment. We need to prepare our students to become as independent as possible in his or her living environment. Subject areas include community awareness, social awareness, money handling and time management, practical writing skills, and social skills.

My Project

The free weights and yoga mats will not only improve our students' strength and flexibility but also enhance their self-confidence. Currently, athletes on the Unified Sports Teams participate in soccer, basketball, softball, and track.

Circuit training will improve our students on the court and the field by increasing stamina, strength, and endurance, while the yoga mats will enable students to participate in yoga to learn deep breathing exercises which will increase lung capacity, and improve their self-regulation, and self-awareness.

The benefits of yoga to our special needs students will lessen chronic pain, lower blood pressure and reduce insomnia. Physical benefits include better balance, weight reduction, circulatory health, and an increase energy levels.
