Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At NCNAA, many of our students are in school for the first time in their lives, and even more are experiencing and exploring music in new ways for the first time as well. In a school where there is no guarantee of a shared language, having a quality music education helps teach the students to communicate in other ways. A more well rounded instrument library is a key implement in helping these students grow to love making music more and continue developing those communication skills that will help them be more successful in the long term.

These xylophones will help diversify not only our instrument library, but also the kinds of music that my kids will be able to make in the classroom.

In Orff methodology, there is a heavy emphasis on instruments such as these xylophones in helping students develop rhythm through playing steady beat in addition to playing melodies overtop of a steady beat. Although wooden xylophones are more expensive than their metal counterparts, the sound that they make is much better suited for playing in an ensemble context, and they are sized larger which makes it easier for kids to be able to play the correct keys. These qualities will make it more feasible for my students to explore new kinds of songs in the classroom and develop new skills that will make them more rounded musicians in the long term.

My goal for these xylophones is to help the students practice with them so that they can use them to perform in our concerts. Adding new, higher quality instruments will also increase the quality of our concerts; not just because of the instruments but because the students will be more invested in creating a product that they are proud of and are willing to present.
