it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"It's never to early to learn!" We want our youngest students to eagerly connect to what it is to learn, and for parents to understand what it is to teach. We will have parents use playful interaction to introduce reading and thinking skills to their little ones.
Ridgewood, NY is a diverse neighborhood, with a high percentage of families living at the poverty level.
I teach special education at a pre-k to 5th grade school and many of our students speak no English at all. The youngest students come to school not knowing what to expect and have a hard time transitioning from home to school. We want to start a program called Never Too Early to Learn where we will be working with parents alongside their preschool aged children. We will show the parents how to engage their little ones in early learning through letter and number play, singing songs, reading books, and just interacting with them. Having the parents and teachers working with the kids on the same skills will strengthen the home-school connection and make it easier for the little ones to return to school each day feeling a sense of belonging and confidence. We hope to create a class of eager learners who see value in education and enjoy coming to school!
My Project
Tiny children will hear nursery rhymes being read to them by their parents and teachers, little hands will place the letter shapes into the puzzle with their moms cheering them on, and dads and kids will count monkeys together! My students need books and other items to help get them ready for learning, including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Sharing Time, and Eight Silly Monkeys.
Our classroom will be a place where we bring together teacher, parent, and child, working as a team to assure that the children have the strongest foundation for learning....both at school and in the home. Parents will be welcomed into the classroom to work with the teachers and children in building literacy, thinking skills, and self-confidence through shared reading, game-playing and other activities. Through these interactions, children will see their parents as teachers too. Parents will take these teaching skills home and will continue to support the learning that goes on every day in the classroom! Children will then see learning as a lifelong activity, not just something that happens within a school building.
The Never Too Early to Learn project will increase parental involvement and will support our parents, students, and teachers together.
It will begin a cycle of success in learning that will hopefully carry on for many years for these young children. Feeling the support of their parents will build up their confidence, making them eager learners who will embrace learning as a huge part of their everyday life.
