Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We love our students. We are an inner city school that is Title One funded. They all come from low to middle income families. Most of them are Hispanic. The students we have in our classroom range from reclassified English Language Learners, students with learning disabilities, and general education students. A lot of them are reading below grade level.

The students we have all want to do well in school and go on to either college or vocational school.

We want them to succeed and give them all the tools that we have available as teachers for them to be successful. We want them to not only learn the academic content of the classroom, but also give them the soft skills necessary to succeed in life. It is important that they learn how to speak and most of all listen to people.

My Project

Why study the holocaust? The answer to this questions is complex, but we need to put this in perspective and remember that genocide is still happening even after the Holocaust of World War II. As years past, people tend to forget, and most shocking, the fact that people are beginning to deny the holocaust. It is important for us as teachers in English and History to teach this subject and let students know about a very dark chapter in human history.

We want students to remember this event and use this as a teaching example to lead lives where compassion and kindness is something that should not be forgotten.

In this period in our time where fake news and rudeness prevails, we want students to reflect and think of how they can make this place a better world one person at a time.

With this in mind, we have read Night by Elie Wiesel for the past five years, and continue to read the book so that students can learn man's inhumanity and finds ways to prevent this from occurring. This book gives us insight to the cruelty of the Holocasut, and this is something mankind must not forget. This book is an important part of our curriculum for 10th grade students and it would be valuable to have copies of this book available for our students. Currently in our classroom, we have to share copies of this book which is falling apart. Pages are torn and in some cases, pages are missing. It would be invaluable to have a good class set for students so that we can read it as a class, to learn and reflect on it, and have students take it home for study or research.
