Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For most of us, going to the movies is a fairly routine event. I discovered several years ago that many students in my school have never actually been to a movie theatre. I was surprised although I probably shouldn't have been since there are no movie theatres near our school in the South Bronx. For the last few years I have made a point of taking my class to the movies, under the proviso that no child of mine will leave my class without having seen a movie in a real movie theatre. (It's my own modest, less arduous version of "No Child Left Behind.") Three years ago we saw "Holes" and the year after that we saw "Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkhaban." In both cases we read the book ("Holes" in its entirety, with 5th graders, Harry Potter, in parts, with my second graders.) Last year I took my second graders to see "Because of Winn-Dixie," a wonderful adaptation of the Kate DiCamillo novel. The kids loved it as a book and a movie. As anyone knows, it can be incredibly satisfying to see a movie after reading the book. We know the intricacies of the plot and the characters. We anticipate the dramatic moments. We assess every detail against what we imagined. For kids, with their inherent lack of cynicism, the experience is twice as dynamic. When a class dives deeply into a book, they become incredible sticklers for detail. When twenty or more kids pool their ideas, the sheer number of discrepancies often cannot be recorded on one sheet of chart paper. For my students the book they experience a second time, as a movie, is inevitably the most meaningful literacy experience of the year. The challenge every year is finding and funding the book/movie experience. I am picky about the book. Last year I had high hopes for "The Cat in The Hat" but I had to nix it after the dreadful reviews. Thankfully “Because of Winn-Dixie?saved us. This year I have my eye on a movie called "Hoot" which is based on a Newbery Honor-winning book by the novelist Carl Hiaasen. The book centers around a boy who moves to a new town, meets a number of new kids (some good, some not so good) and gets involved in an effort to save an endangered species of owl. The movie is being produced by the same company that made both "Holes" and "Because of Winn-Dixie?quot; so I am optimistic that it will be a high-quality picture. This current school year I had the opportunity to move up with my kids to third grade. We have been working away endlessly in preparation for the New York State ELA (English Language Arts) test, which was in January and then for the Math test which was in early March. We have not had a lot of time for fun. Some of my kids from last year asked to do "Winn-Dixie" again. Meanwhile I have several new students who can't believe they are going to be seeing their first movie in a theatre. As always, I know this will be a very special event that the students will remember for a long time. In our school we do not ask the families to contribute toward field trips and related activities since most do not have that much disposable income. Accordingly, in the past, I have raised the money from a combination of my own funds and support from various family and friends. I have already promised my class that we are going sometime in early May (the movie opens on May 5, 2006). We travel for free on the subway and we will get the group/children's rate for the tickets. If you would like to help defray the expense of this trip, your support will be greatly appreciated and my students will send you some very nice thank-you letters, which they love writing. Thank you for your consideration.
