A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Changing colors and fizzing chemicals! Our students can't do any experiments for one of the coolest units in chemistry! Neutralization reactions and indicators are just two of the things that make acid-base chemistry, one of the most important units we learn, exciting.
To say that my students have led challenging lives is an understatement.
My students come from a district where the high school drop-out rate is well above 50%, yet they have succeeded in reaching their final years of high school and given themselves the goal of going on to college. Many will be the first in their family to do so. These juniors, and seniors enrolled in chemistry to challenge themselves and to develop the problem-solving skills necessary for college. Some even have goals of working in chemistry-based fields such as forensics and medical sciences. Many of them work to make ends meet at home, and thus don't have time or money to contribute to fundraising. Despite these challenges, my students are enthusiastic and eager to learn and get their hands dirty.
However, given ever-increasing budget constraints and the newness of the chemistry program, our school does not have the funds to adequately stock even basic laboratory supplies for chemistry.
My Project
This is our second year of chemistry and our first of AP chemistry! I'm thrilled to share my knowledge of and passion for the subject, but students need to have hands-on experience, which we've been limited in. It takes a large budget to build a properly equipped chemistry laboratory with even the bare minimum. My school and students lack the resources to help create one. Laboratory equipment, especially a classroom set, is expensive and the price of chemicals adds up.
Funding this project will have a huge impact on my students' understanding of chemistry as we investigate acids and bases and eventually overlap it with the acidity and basicity of the human body. We'll be able to do titrations and neutralization's, to explore what indicators and buffer systems are and how they affect acid/base reactions. My students will be able to strengthen their math skills with the calculations we do for these labs, and my AP chemistry students will see how advanced math is used in chemistry
My students have difficulty in staying motivated throughout the year, and nothing motivates them more than doing lab experiments!
They learn best when they're able to do something hands-on. So many chemistry concepts are abstract and seem unbelievable or just plain difficult. Being able to do experiments and learn proper laboratory techniques with these materials will enable my students to see these concepts in action and understand them.
