Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The Laboratory School of Finance & Technology is a public 6-12 school that serves students in the South Bronx. I co-teach Neuroscience to 12th graders. It is year one for this course offering and it has been exciting to see their enthusiasm with the subject. It was especially important to us to introduce topics of interest during this transitional period from remote instruction back into full in-person instruction. Our students have not disappointed. They are using medical jargon, having debates and even doing dissections. We are proud of the progress they've made thus far.
My Project
Robo-roach is a hands-on experiment in neuroscience that allows the students to perform their own advanced neural interface surgery to remotely control the movement of a cockroach. It is a great way to learn about neural micro-stimulation, sensory and neural adaptation, and electronics.
"Learning by doing” is a common theme in an experiential educational environment.
That is because when students are engaged with their hands and their minds, they actually are more focused and motivated to learn.
The hands-on learning benefits helps children of all ages retain knowledge and grow. The more that children can immerse themselves in, and engage with, their education, the more they will be motivated and take pride in all that they learn.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
