My Students

According to Albert Einstein, "The only source of knowledge is experience." When you teach students who are limited by experiences due to lack of opportunities then knowledge is too limited. Providing opportunities to my students will give them experiences to gain knowledge.

My students are young adolescents who are not only faced with the stereotype of growing up in Appalachia but also the reality.

These are students who face unimaginable circumstances like poverty, physical abuse, emotional abuse, drug abuse, foster care, on top of the stereotype of being ignorant. My students overcome daily obstacles in hopes of being the first in their family to graduate college, to graduate high school or for some be the first to make it to high school. These are the students that show up with a smile on their face ready to learn and these are the students who make me want to be the best teacher I can be!

My Project

When you try to inspire students daily to rise above their life, it is a challenge to grab their attention. No matter what socioeconomic status, technology is one way to grab their attention as is hands on science. I would like to eventually have a class set of six netbooks one for each group in the class. One specific lesson I would use the netbooks for would be the Rollercoaster Challenge. During the Rollercoaster Challenge students could use the netbooks to conduct research on rollercoaster design, then they could design their own rollercoasters using the principles of physics. Students could then record and calculate the speed of a marble traveling through the rollercoaster in a table on the netbook. Students could create graphs and write lab reports to explain what made their coaster a success. This will teach my students how science is relevant to the real world through hands on lab and technology experiences.

This project will give my students real life experiences to gain knowledge that will inspire them to want more out of their lives.

Even for those students who are non-readers, this is a lab experience that everyone can find success and therefore KNOWLEDGE!
