Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students and families are ready to learn and ready to succeed, supported by strong community involvement and pride in their families, heritage and school. Our school population is 95% Hispanic, with nearly 41% learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Families and teachers prepare students for the pathway to college and career, which is key for our students: the average income for residents within the school's zip code is significantly less than the state's average.

Despite, and often because of such challenges, our students eagerly participate in both bilingual and monolingual curricula, along with many other opportunities for student growth including technology and engineering projects, ballroom dance, and after school wrap-around programs.

Our attendance is excellent because our students come here to learn and succeed.

My Project

The crux of this project is the certificates that are used to recognize positive behaviors in the classroom. The two-part certificates are effective for several reasons: they are not a material reward like candy or a prize, yet are tangible recognition. Part of the certificate can be taken home to a parent, which builds positive relationships with family, and part of the certificate is displayed in the classroom as a way to remind students and teacher that we do, indeed, have much to celebrate and to maintain a positive focus.

Other requested items are classroom staples which are depleted: scissors and colored paper.

We need these kind of supplies to do the kind of work that keeps students interested, so they participate and work in class. The certificates and supplies serve the same purpose because the students need to keep busy and make things to feel a sense of accomplishment. The certificates help show that their accomplishments are recognized by others, both at school and when they present the certificates to family.
