My group of students is spunky, caring, and curious. They are always asking me for more work, more learning time, and more books! In spite of their high energy, they are captivated by books and can read for long periods of time when their varied interests are piqued.
My scholars come from all different ethnic backgrounds.
Many of them have language difficulties because they are new to the country or come from a home where English is not spoken. Although they live in one of the most exciting and progressive cities in the world, the overwhelming majority live in extreme poverty, and most receive free lunches. The one thing linking all my scholars together is a love for learning that has not yet been altered by the challenges facing them daily. I passionately want them to love school and be motivated to gain as much knowledge as possible. With their enthusiasm for school, coupled with the resources to successfully inspire them, I believe they can achieve whatever they set their minds to.
Jane McGonigal said, "There is no problem that doesn't have some underlying need for more optimism, stamina, resilience and collaboration." In our classroom, we are fortunate to have a well stocked library for my students which I have bought over the past year. Since our school does not have a library, students rely on our classroom library as well as the other Fifth grade room's library. Through their resilience and collaboration, we have managed to stay optimistic and embrace our resources. At this time, more students are requesting "new favorite titles" of books they have heard of and are very interested in getting their hands on. My students would love to dive into these new book series such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Cam Jansen, Who is Biographies, Nate the Great and other class children's' series. With my students and their teachers, we brainstormed and narrowed down our list to these books which we really want to read!
I want to give my students the tools so they can develop a love of reading at this integral point of their academic careers.
Help me build a love of reading with some awesome new books!
