This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I counsel 12-14-year-old growing adolescents in the poorest congressional school district in the United States; over 90% of my students come from the surrounding impoverished neighborhood.

My students consistently earn high test scores, arrive at school daily and on-time and demonstrate resiliency while navigating life despite traumatic experiences.

They focus their time learning content they need to graduate to high school and beyond showing commitment to their school community and their future.

This may be difficult for some students due to the lack of resources at home to fulfill their basic needs of shelter, food, and hygiene.

My Project

Many of my students report that, at times, they don't come to school because their uniforms are dirty and they didn't have the resources to wash it. They also report a lack of access to regularly needed hygiene products such as soap, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. I am looking for donations of these much-needed hygiene products.

These donations would help ensure our students are able to attend school ridicule free and concentrate on learning instead of on basic necessities for survival.

Students will have access to these products, no questions asked. Having the necessary hygiene products for students and their families would help them come to school ready to learn, decrease absences due to embarrassment, and decrease teasing which in turn increases mental health and academic achievement. The items in our cart will help our school start a pantry of toiletries where students will be able to take the items they need for their home without judgment.

Children deserve to learn without the added stress that comes along with poverty and not having the essential items they need to maintain healthy bodies and clean clothing add unnecessary stressors to children who are already laden with adult burdens.

Help us decrease embarrassment, decrease the impact of trauma and increase success for young people in the South Bronx!
