Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"My heart is singing this morning. A miracle has happened! The light of understanding has shone upon my little pupil's mind, and behold, all things have changed!" ~Anne Sullivan As an SLP this is what we work for! We want nothing more than to see our students succeed, even if it's by a mere inch.

As a Bilingual Speech teacher in a K-5 school, I mainly serve the Latino population, which makes up the bulk of the 1600 students enrolled in our school.

My students come from low income working families, who don't have many available resources to aid their children's academic success. All of my students have a willingness to learn and come to speech ready to participate. Many of my students benefit from assistance to process auditory information as well as to express themselves verbally. They learn when they are engaged in activities that are of interest to them. Our school challenges instruction to enable all of our students to reach their maximum potential. We ensure that the richness of our cultural diversity is recognized, appreciated and valued. Ultimately we want our students to be curious, independent and enthusiastic, to develop self-esteem and self-confidence, to love learning and to become lifelong learners.

My Project

With the resources requested we would be able to reproduce materials aligned with the core curriculum in our school to better aid our speech students in their academic achievements. We would be able to encourage the development of expressive and receptive language skills with the reading comprehension games, which would engage them in learning. Those with difficulty expressing themselves will have a prompt to support these skills. The hanging organizer would hold a speech folder for each of my students with all of their work and rewards. The children would have a visual to help them independently find their own folders.

The printer would allow us to reproduce a variety of worksheets and activities from books that would otherwise lie on a shelf.

We would be able to make copies of any activity on hand, which would improve the quality of the session and carryover assignments. The reading comprehension games would engage my students in a learning and fun activity, which would stimulate their expressive and receptive language skills.
