My Students

Welcome to the eye opening world of my first grade students! It is a fun and exhilarating room filled with 19 students who walk in each morning with their eyes bright with excitement and wonder as they ponder what adventure awaits them today! First grade is a year filled with all kinds of new feats! Feats of learning to read, learning to add and subtract, to become scientists, and see how they are a small but mighty part of the world around them!

Imaginations and enthusiasm soar as we explore new ideas, new concepts, and begin to conquer the mystery of the world around us!

These are 6 year old students who come alive at the prospect of using popsicle sticks and glue! They thrill at the chance to run, play, and go on great learning adventures together! They work hard at trying to figure out what all of these letters mean when they are grouped together so they can unravel the mystery of reading. This is a class of boys and girls who are brave, courageous, who are learning that it's okay to make mistakes, and to always do their best! They are truly full of wonder and potential!

My Project

Our new superintendent has challenged teachers to create a “book-rich” environment in every classroom. Book access is a significant factor in literacy development.

Research shows that students in classrooms with high-quality classroom libraries read 50 percent more than students who do not have access to a library in the classroom.

Teachers are encouraged to be “choosy” about the books in a classroom library and to avoid purchasing every outdated and dog-eared book from yard sales. Students need to get excited about the books in the classroom library. Having a high-quality classroom library would allow me to present and display books in enticing ways that encourage and prompt interest, dialogue, and thinking. With a growing classroom library, the buzz about books in our classroom will bloom!
