My Students

My students come from various cultural and social backgrounds in a wonderfully beautiful neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY.

They are a group of eager learners and readers, and share a strong love towards books.

We love to discuss complex topics, debate from different perspectives, and also build empathy through discussions and readings. Each student brings their own unique experience and knowledge into the classroom that further helps our classroom community to grow a better understanding of each other and the world.

My Project

Often times, minority protagonists are represented through one specific lens in fiction books, and often from a historical point. It is important that students are exposed to minority protagonists are also presented as characters like them in the present, who struggle with similar issues whether it be language, family, friendship, school, etc.

Publishing companies have heard these demands and are slowly presenting books that represent different narratives of different children that exist in our country.

It is our job as teachers to introduce these books to our students, to help them understand that there is more than one story.

These books showcase Latinx protagonists whose narrative mirror similar experiences to our students, rather than simply a narrative of escaping
