My Students
I am an ESOL teacher, and most of my students are newcomers to the country. They have come from several Central American nations, Togo, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Philippines. Their level of previous education varies widely. Some attended school only up to the 8th grade; students such as D. (from El Salvador) left school to work before emigrating to the U.S. Others, such as B., had extensive schooling, but only in Arabic. All of my students are motivated and eager to be successful in their new home.
My Project
Remote learning is especially challenging for my students, who bring limited skills with learning technology to our endeavor. This year, I will teach newcomers and long-term English learners, both of whom need practice that can be tailored to their individual needs. To succeed in high school, a more advanced ELL may need support with grammatical structures and vocabulary. Self-paced modules that I can review will be most effective for these students. My newcomers will be learning about American history, and we can work together in teacher-led Nearpod lessons to stimulate discussion, build on classroom concepts, and review key ideas. It's important to give online students a rich mix of digital media; Nearpod has greatly enhanced its offerings this year!
