My students are curious learners, constantly asking questions, digging deeper, and trying to understand the world around them. They seek meaning rather than just comprehension, and are willing to do the work to get there. As an Environmentally focused school, my students are also always on the lookout for better ways to keep our planet and ourselves healthier.
These are kids who care.
They care about the world around them and how their actions impact more than just themselves. When an answer isn't simple or straight-forward, we learn how to use science in order to gather information and make positive changes for our school, community, and the environment.
My Project
"Everyone get out your worksheets we're going to practice multiplication!" That's every student's favorite announcement, right? ...Not so much. Most schools have come a long way from the days of students sitting in desks in straight rows, listening to long lectures and filling out worksheet after worksheet. Now, a typical school classroom might have students spread out in flexible seating choices, and rather than worksheets students are able to enjoy learning in a variety of different settings, with hands-on and applicable projects. Our school has taken this a step further, as an environmentally focused STEM School, we take most of our learning into the outdoors, using the natural environment as a lens for our project and place-based learning. With this in mind, we are always looking for creative ways to not only teach, but to keep our students active--the perfect solution is orienteering! With the implementation of this project, students will learn basic navigation, as well as have the opportunity to challenge and test their knowledge on traditional subjects such as math, reading, and science.
With a compass in one hand and a map in the other, students will work in teams to navigate through forests and fields in search of check points where we might have set up reading passages, science trivia, or math problems to complete.
Orienteering is a fun and engaging way to practice and learn subjects that students may have a more difficult time focusing on in a traditional classroom setting. For the project itself, handheld orienteering compasses will be provided for groups of 2-4 students depending on grade level, as well as walkie-talkies to remain in contact with the instructor. In addition to these materials, a curriculum book and orienteering stampers will complete the supply list. We can't wait to go on an off-road adventure!
