As one of the most diverse middle schools in the nation, we welcome all learners. Of our over 400 students, about 40 are newcomers from all around the world who are studying English, making friends, and finding their place in our community.
Many of our students are new to the chilly northern climate, icy walkways, and long hours of darkness.
They are learning to live and thrive in a new environment. We are requesting help to get 40 pairs of ice grippers to prevent slips and falls, and keep our newcomers safe from slips and falls.
My Project
Our program, the Newcomers' Center in Anchorage, Alaska is a nationally renowned program for brand new immigrants. These students come from countries like Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, Colombia, Albania, Pakistan, and Iraq.
Walking on snow and ice in hilly terrain is a new experience for our students and a supply of ice cleats will be invaluable for them to navigate the new terrain.
They will be able to stay safe as they walk from the bus to school.
These students are very appreciative of the opportunities that their new country has offered, and would be happy to have the experience of walking safely in cleats.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
