My Project

We are envisioning a Japanese Garden / Botanic Garden style space. We want to make a space with and for our students to support them in both building community and advocating for their own health & wellness.

Our goal with this proposal is to create a therapeutic safe space at our school, the Institute for Collaborative Education, that invites middle and high school students to calm and regulate through the use of all five senses.

Students will have an area to sit, play, and regulate within what can often otherwise be a stressful stimulatory academic environment.

The space will invite students to explore their senses in a number of ways both active and passive through the use of string lights, fidget toys, bean bag chairs, and noise machines. We want this space to serve as a spot in which students can regulate and feel safe, above all. We will create a therapeutic space with a variety of equipment that provides all students with sensory input to support their ability to self regulate and seek calm. This will then better prepare them for learning and interacting with others.
