My Project

My 9th grade ecology students have a passion for STEM and deeply care about their environment, climate change, and sustainability issues in New York City. They are critical thinkers and diverse, hands-on learners that are eager to apply the ecological concepts we learn in class to the real world.

The local park next to our school is an incredible field site where students can investigate the biodiversity of native plant species and the challenges that invasive plants bring to ecosystems.

This upcoming school year, I want my students to gather ecological data on native plant species in our local park. I also want my students to identify invasive plant species and work with the Parks and Recreation Department to remove such plants.

The specific items I am requesting, such as the metal frame quadrats, will provide the necessary tools for students to collect ecological data and remove invasive species in our local park. These tools will help students explore a scientific question in a hands-on manner outside the classroom. These tools will also provide an opportunity for students to collaborate with local park staff by sharing biodiversity data that can be used for the protection and maintenance of native plants in their school community.
