Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students loved their art teacher who died suddenly while putting up the student art show last June. They loved his attention to their uniqueness and his ability to incorporate his love and appreciation of nature. He provided opportunities for our students to observe, draw and paint nature.

Our students are disaffected from school and need peace, empowerment and beauty.

They need to feel the pride of creating a memorial garden and they need a place to sit and contemplate this time in their lives and the importance of nature. They felt such a sense of loss when their teacher died and would benefit from a creative opportunity to channel their grief into a community project that brings beauty and honors their beloved teacher.

My Project

Our students have designed a native garden that will attract bees, butterflies and birds, while providing a place to sit in peace. The pergola will offer shade and a support for vines to grow and for the birdhouses the students have made. My students also need a circular tub and gravel to create a mini pond. The students have planned to create a small water feature to supply water to birds and an ecological feature to study and appreciate the fish and water plants. Having these features will allow classes to use the space for study and provide seating for students and teachers.

This space will be not just be a beautiful memorial, but a testament to the determination, creativity and passion that our City-As-School students have.

The garden is at the entrance to our school and will give the students pride and comfort when they enter and leave the school. In addition, art classes, writing classes, science classes and yoga classes can use the space for teaching and observing.
