My Students

My third graders often start the year assuming that Native Americans disappeared long ago, that they fought with cowboys, spoke to animals, and always wore feathers in their hair. My goal is to help my students begin to see the whole range of Native civilization, from past to present.

These incoming third grade students attend a small urban public elementary school in New York.

They will stay with me for both third and fourth grades, and I'm really looking forward to working with them for the next two years. They are an extremely diverse group, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, and special education needs. I've taught at my school for 15 years, and the Native American curriculum is very close to my heart, one that I've done lots of extra research for and revised countless times.

My Project

Our class will undertake a year-long study of Native Americans, which will encompass a wide range of science and history. We'll learn about everything from the topography and wildlife of Manhattan before European contact, to the myths and realities of Pocahontas' life, to the experiences of Native Americans living on and off reservations nowadays. A big part of our study is the traditional lifeways of the Lenape (also known as Delaware) Indians who were the first inhabitants of our area. Not many books for children have been published about the Lenapes, but two of the best are the ones I'm requesting in this grant. In addition to readable and accurate text, they include highly detailed and informative illustrations, which will be crucial in making the information accessible to students at lower reading levels.

In the past I've made loads of photocopies of these books so kids can do independent or partner research, but this strategy is time-consuming and inadequate.

Having enough books for kids to share with partners will be a great help. The kids will learn both valuable information about the Lenape people, and research techniques that will form the foundation of their investigative skills in the future. Having these books will make a huge difference for my kids this year and for future classes too!
