Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every year, we take our students on a trip to the National Book Foundation's Teen Press Conference in Manhattan. It is a rare opportunity for students to get to hear from award nominated authors, as well as ask them questions and meet them.

Leading up to the event, we like to engage our students in inquiring about each author and book, checking out any of the nominated books from our library, and debating which novel or author will win and why.

This gamifying of the Young People's Literature Award nominees allows our students to really feel invested and excited about the awards, which are live streamed the day after our trip. With all the information the students acquire, from previewing the novels to interviewing the authors, each student picks their winner and we sit and watch together as they winner is announced. It is a unique experience that allows our students to truly become invested in being passionate about a book they normally wouldn't have learned anything about.
