My Project

As a Certified Teacher Librarian, I am always looking to grow my knowledge to help students improve in literacy. To further my teaching strategies as a Teacher Librarian, I am seeking National Board Certification. The National Board is recognized as the “gold standard” in teacher librarian certification. The National Board “believes higher standards for teachers means better learning for students.” Did you know, that in Washoe County School District, only 387 teachers are Nationally Board Certified? The assessment for certification is grouped into 4 components, and each one costs $475. I am seeking certification in two components this year, which equals out to $950. The components will address my content knowledge, differentiation in instruction, teaching practice and learning environment, and effective and reflective practitioner to improve literacy. The process requires a thorough demonstration of my teaching in the library through video recorded samples, student work samples, demonstration of my knowledge of students and strategies for lesson planning, as well as an assessment of my content knowledge. This process will help me grow professionally, as I self reflect on my skills and strategies in teaching in the library and helping students grow in literacy. As I evaluate learning strengths and needs of students, I will see how I best need to differentiate and modify instruction for student literacy needs. I will also watch my recordings and reflect on my practices for the most student engagement. I will also collaborate with colleagues, parents/guardians, and the community to best know all of the students and how to assess them based on that knowledge. I look forward to this process. This will be my twenty-fourth year in education, and I value the opportunity to grow more in my abilities as an educator to help more students increase their literacy.
