This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Request: John Green's "Everything Is Tuberculosis" will widen the lens on our class exploration of narrative medicine to analyze how larger contextual factors such as history, culture, race, gender and geography frame or condition narratives about the nature or disposition of diseases, patience, and physicians.

Academic Reading, Writing, and Listening Goals of the project:

1. Active and empathetic listening

2. Storytelling as Best Practice in health care

3. Practices in interpersonal communication, especially active listening strategies

4. Reflective journal-writing on personal stories, listening strategies practices, and the value of empathetic listening

Drawing on the idea of "narrative medicine" and storytelling, students will collaborate in creating, organizing, and conducting an in-person interview of an adult about the adult's lived experiences as a patient in our health care system.

Students will then write a report detailing interview content (cognition), nonverbal and emotional expressions (affective), and active listening strategies employed (metacognition).

My students...

1. informally demonstrate an ethic of care and concern for themselves, their school, and their community.

2. seek out Reginal Occupational Program (ROP) courses in health care.

3. are, generally speaking, the first in their families to graduate from high school

4. show interests in vocational schools and community colleges with an ear towards service professions such as nursing, teaching, masonry, carpentry, automotive mechanics, et al.

5. are often the only English-speaking advocates for their families when communicating with institutional agents in health care, education, and judicial.
