My Students

I teach health at an International Baccalaureate school with a rigorous college prep curriculum. My students have amazing teachers and great classes, but they also need non-academic skills and strategies to help them manage their stress and balance their academic and extracurricular lives.

My students are smart and ambitious.

Because they have chosen to attend a school with a focus on challenging college prep courses, they are often overwhelmed and stressed. In health they learn about all dimensions of health including physical and mental health. While discussing stress management, I always talk about the benefits of yoga, but very few of my students have had the opportunity to actually practice yoga themselves. Therefore, very few of my students have had the opportunity to reap the benefits of yoga. In addition to reducing stress and improving flexibility, benefits of yoga for adolescents include: learning relaxation through breathing; improving strength, balance and coordination; and increasing the ability to concentrate (yogaminded.com, 2015). Finally, yoga allows teens to step away from technology and improve their confidence by attempting (and eventually mastering) challenging poses (teen-yoga.com, 2013).

My Project

Student at my school will have the opportunity to take a weekly yoga class taught by certified yoga instructors who have agreed to volunteer their time. Each yoga class will be an hour and involve a challenging series of poses. All classes will be appropriate for beginners as well as those who have some yoga experience. After participating in the yoga sessions, the goal is for students to be able to incorporate what they've learned during yoga into their academic life, whether it's flexibilty, perseverance or focus. Practicing yoga epitomizes the idea of having a growth mindset and we learn when we engage in challenging work. Yoga mats, straps, cleaning supplies and storage are requested.

This project will give my students exposure to an athletic outlet beyond the standard sports offered at my school.

It will also give students the long term benefits of yoga including stress reduction. Finally, practicing yoga can be done throughout a person’s life time. This project could be the beginning of a lifelong yoga practice by my students.
