My Project

I am so proud of my students and their deep connection to Hawaiian culture, language, and the stories that shape our ʻāina (land) and people. Each child in my classroom brings a unique sense of curiosity, imagination, and pride in exploring the rich traditions of Hawaiʻi. Their love for learning is infectious, and I want to nurture that love by surrounding them with books that celebrate Hawaiian values, myths, and the beauty of our islands.

“Ua lehulehu a manomano ka ʻikena a ka Hawaiʻi.” (Great and numerous is the knowledge of the Hawaiian people.)

The books I am requesting will make a meaningful impact on our Hawaiian Studies curriculum. The Rainbow of Mānoa and The Brave Hen of Pālolo—self-published works I am honored to have created—will allow my students to explore stories grounded in their own community and cultural identity. Having five copies of each book will enable us to work in small reading groups, making these stories more engaging and interactive. Beyond classroom learning, these books can be gifted as prizes to inspire students to embrace their own creative potential.

Additionally, books like Lei and the Fire Goddess and Aloha Everything will add diverse voices and perspectives to our classroom library. These titles will enrich our exploration of Hawaiian values like aloha (love), lōkahi (unity), and mālama ʻāina (care for the land) while fostering a love for storytelling and literacy.

Help me give my students the chance to immerse themselves in stories that reflect their heritage, spark their imaginations, and empower them to honor their roots and dream big!
