Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Our school is located in Lancaster City and services a 96% Latino population in addition to being a wall-to-wall Title I school. Our school is in the middle of restructuring our entire educational program to meet deficiencies we've seen in terms of literacy and math scores. Our students are incredibly resilient and have overcome many adversities to receive an excellent education.
After some diagnostic testing earlier this year, we have seen a 25-33% significant growth in our students' English Language Arts proficiency.
My Project
We have seen a great jump in our students's scores on state literacy testing, but we still have a long way to go! One way research shows us we can increase literacy scores is simply that kids are reading! Our school does not have a library, and most of our students do not currently have access to our city's public library, so we want to have a mystery check-out day!
All students will receive a book wrapped in brown paper so they don't know what they've received!
After reading the book, students may decide if they want to keep the book or come in and switch it with another grade-level text. It keeps students reading and is a fun way to get kids excited about literacy!
