My Students

In our day and age technology is the future and the children are adapting very well to technology. But it has come to my attention that because of technology children are forgetting how to have a real conversation.

My students are from various backgrounds, but a majority of them have come from another country.

Their parents moved them here to America to give them a better education and better opportunities in the future. These children are not only learning English in the classroom, but that is the only place for them to practice using English, as well. These children are adapting to all the technology that is available to them, but I have noticed they are not able to hold conversations with each other. One of the reasons they sometimes can not hold a conversation is due to their lack of experiences and exposure to our culture. Therefore we are trying to teach these children how to have conversations through books.

My Project

Just like how adults have books clubs, and they read together and meet up to discuss ideas about the books, that is what we want our students to experience as well. The students will use the books in book clubs and read the same book together and have conversations that stem from the book. We are limited with resources in the school due to all the budget cuts. We are lucky to have one copy of different books in a series, but to have the children take turns reading the book they will forget things and the conversations will be less meaningful. With multiple copies of these series books the students can plan together how much they will read and sit together to the read book. When they are finished they will have the chance to discuss and learn to have conversations about the book right after they read it. We will also teach the children how to write post-its as they are reading the book, like adults. Then the students can go back and share their ideas and discuss their thoughts.

We are so focused on producing newer and better technology we sometimes forget the simplest things such as conversation and reading.

Especially with English as Second Language students, they need to practice speaking and having conversations. These children will not feel left out because they haven't had as many experience as other students. They can share conversations through a piece of literature that they share together.
