Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an exceptional group of 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th-graders who come from a very diverse group of neighborhoods around New York City. The majority are from Brooklyn, and many are low-income, as is the bulk of our school.

As students go, this particular group is incredibly inquisitive and thoughtful.

For the first time in my career, I will be teaching students for a second year in a row, and I could not be more excited. The excitement they showed as they participated in labs, grappled with the "big questions" of each unit, and the dedication they showed to inquiry-based thinking was inspiring to see.

My Project

For my entire teaching career, I have pushed myself to be the best teacher I can be for all of my students. I have taught Living Environment and Earth Science for years, and though I attempt to improve my lessons each year, I feel that my curriculum is very strong. Both of these courses are taught in all New York City high school in preparation for year-end Regents exams, and as such, there are a large number of resources and professional development opportunities offered around these two subjects. This year, however, I am teaching Anatomy and Physiology for the first time at my school, and have struggled in finding any professional development opportunities in this field. My Anatomy curriculum, therefore, is limited. I am finding that my students are engaging strongly with the introductory subject matter, which motivates me to find resources that will keep them interested as we progress through the remaining units!

At the National Science Teacher’s Association conference this November/December, there are many, many sessions that are geared towards Anatomy and Physiology, which is exactly what I need to improve my curriculum for my students!

The two that I am most interested in are “Engaging Your Anatomy Students: Building Muscles in Clay,” which is a NGSS- and STEAM-aligned activity to show both the anatomy and physiology of the skeletal and muscle systems, and “Autopsy: Forensic Dissection” which incorporates the cutting-edge field of forensic science in lab dissections of fetal pigs.

I am requesting, therefore, help in financing this conference, which would allow me to bring teaching strategies and resources immediately back to my classroom to help my students. Learning from other great teachers will help me enhance my curriculum and ensure that my students are getting the most they can out of our school year!
