This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 18 students who are all non-English speaking students and are all mostly from low-income families. Two of my students are special needs students. They all come from homes where the parents, unfortunately, do not speak English, and they do not have a role model in order to learn the English language from. My students are energetic little kids who love to learn and are very excited about being in school. However, since my students are all non-English speaking students, they need a lot of visuals and hands-on activities in order to learn and make the learning process more meaningful. Also, due to the lack of knowledge from the part of the parents on how to help their children, I feel that my students need a double dosage of educational fun activities in school in order to be up to par with their counterparts and succeed in school

My Project

Being able to read is such a big accomplishment for children. But reading doesn't come easy for some of them. I work with children who unfortunately, come from households where they do not have books or get to engage in any kind of educational activities. As a teacher and mother of a three year old, I'm constantly researching ways to help young kids learn how to read. When I come upon new strategies, I am willing to try it out in hopes of getting those students who are struggling to learn their letters, sounds, phonemic awareness and eventually begin to read.

When students struggle in reading in the lower grades, it will take a lot of time to catch up in the upper grades.

That's why I believe that teaching how to read as early as possible is so crucial. So, I would love to try the Learning Dynamics Reading System with my prekindergarten students. Based on what I've seen and read about it I know it will be a great addition to my prekindergarten program because it involves the use of fun activities such as music and story telling. This reading series will provide my students with books for each letter of the alphabet, a fun song for each letter sound, coloring pages and much more. The Little Readers series will be an awesome way of motivating my students to practice what they learn. These little reader mini books will be part of our classroom library which will allow them to explore grade level books on their own during their center time.
