I am a third grade teacher at an amazing new charter school in Brooklyn. We face many challenges and are required to be very flexible to create the best instruction for our children who are coming to our school from various school environments. One of my favorite subjects to teach is writing. I love giving children the opportunity to write freely and to learn how to develop their ideas to communicate to their readers all of their creative thoughts. Unfortunately, some of them have terrible printing habits which make it hard for their peers and for other readers to read their writing. Next year in fourth grade they take a high-stakes standardized writing test. Unfortunately, children's intelligence and ability are often judged on a quick first impression from their handwriting. Sometimes their handwriting does not allow the reader to even decode their thoughts. Third grade is the average year to learn cursive and my children have been begging me since the beginning of the year to begin. Our school does not have any teaching materials for cursive handwriting. The other third grade teacher and I would like to teach them cursive using a program called Handwriting Without Tears. I first learned about Handwriting Without Tears from the occupational therapist from my old school. This program was created by an occupational therapist to help children at all levels to feel better about their writing so that they can feel confident and do better in all of their classes. The creator says it makes handwriting easy and fun. I experienced success with this program while tutoring a child with special needs last summer. He struggled greatly with fine motor skills and visual perception. He not only improved greatly with his Handwriting Without Tears program, he loved it. His parents were shocked and his teacher noticed a remarkable difference in the fall. I am positive that short daily lessons would allow our students to feel immediate success in their writing. However, we do not have any sort of teaching materials for cursive handwriting. We would love to have a copy of the HWT cursive handwriting workbook for each of my children, and two copies of the teacher's guide for cursive writing.
