My Students Need to Get Back on Beat!

My Students

My students are coming from an unfair background. Although they are all from Philadelphia, the majority of them come from neighborhoods that are in need. They deal with a lot of life situations that NO students should encounter - but they do it, and they strive to push forward to better themselves and their community.

As soon as they see you're there to help, they open up and show that they are some of the smartest kids one would encounter!

Not all of them will go on to pursue music as a career, but they see the value in music. They see it as a positive outlet for a not so positive environment. They're quick to discover music is teaching them positive qualities like discipline, responsibility, and work ethic all while improving on cognitive, critical thinking, communication, team building, and fine/gross motor skills.

My Project

During my tenure, it has become my goal to turn how we teach drums into one of the best drum studios in the city. Focusing on drum sets, we started with two kits in TERRIBLE shape - missing parts, suspending half a cymbal stand off the bass drum, and doing whatever we could to turn what we had into complete kits for kids to learn how to play drums. Each year we have successfully run DonorsChoose campaigns to receive missing components, which in return provided our students with complete drum sets. The drum department at FLC is now the top in the School District of Philadelphia when it comes to drum set studies. Our students are learning what it takes to become a professional musician, while having the opportunity to perform for various events throughout the city of Philadelphia, and even backed Kenny Loggins!

During remote instruction, we had to loan some kits to our drum set majors - unfortunately typical wear occured.

This campaign will allow us to refresh all the drum kits at school with brand new heads, while replacing a couple missing pieces like the isolation headphones, hi-hat stand, and drum thrones.
