Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Greetings! I'm am writing to you in the hopes that you will donate a grab bag of much-needed materials to my classroom in Brooklyn, NY. I love my job, and live to to teach my 3rd grade students. The school itself is beyond compare: our administration is without equal, teachers approach their work with enthusiasm and diligence, parents pitch in when they can, and students meet curricular challenges with exuberant energy. The sole resource in which we are lacking is, of course, money. Through the years, I have relied on my general sense of thrift, as well as the generosity of the DonorsChoose community, to help me fill in the gaps with regard to classroom and curricular supplies. Now, as the start of the school year fast approaches, I am once again calling upon you, the generous and thoughtful community of donors, for aid. The early days of a school year are filled with hopes and dreams, and great expectations for what lays ahead. But time soon proves to be in short supply, and all too often current events get under-addressed (or worse, ignored). Last year, I was able to procure a class subscription of "Time for Kids" and it proved to be a vital resource as we began, and then moved through, the academic year. We have so much required material to get through, and so little time to accomplish our goals, that "Time for Kids" allows my class to keep up with current issues and events in a way that they would otherwise be denied. Each issue stands as part of their weekend homework assignment, which often gets parents involved in discussions that would otherwise go un-sparked. When we reconvene on Monday morning, I allot a small period to review and wrap up what they learned about over the weekend. This process works incredibly well, and I am eager for it to continue with this year's crop of students. I have also included a request for educational games and materials that will help support the content areas of social studies and science. These items will help round out my students' academic day, and possibly pique the more introverted students' interest in a fashion that a typical lesson might not.
