This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each student of my school has an incredible compelling story to tell. We are located in the heart of Little Havana, and immigrant community of Latin-Americans. Our students are from many places, but remember those children from Central America that walked, hitched on trains and endured a long treacherous trail. Some have made it here to reach family and escape the violence. The ways they tell their stories is not with sadness, it has been the adventure of the lives. The friendships, the memories and the places are to stick with them forever. With these supplies we hope to graphically recreate in short narrated animation clips some of their stories about moving to Miami and how it will impact their future.

My Project

The 5th grade ELL (English Language Learners) students will create sets made out of recycled cardboard and modeling clay of the countries and neighborhoods of origin. They will also make clay versions reinforced with wire of themselves and the important characters of their stories. An audio recording of the story will narrate in a voice over fashion the moving images obtained with the camcorder. The sets will need to be lit up using the set lights for consistent lighting. I can not wait to see our students learning all there is to know about making an animated movie and sharing it with the world.

If we ask where they are from, we must follow by asking where they are going.

This group will tell a story familiar to them, that of immigrating in search of a safer future and their adaptation process. Last year, I attempted to capture their stories using illustrations. Sadly; without their voices to recount their experiences, the images loose some impact. I am asking for your help and support to this time share in an entertaining and engaging manner the stories from my students.
