I have been teaching at a public high school in Central New York for many years. This district is rich with diversity. About 60% of the students here are classified as minorities, and approximately 10% of the students speak a language other than English at home. Unfortunately, the poverty level here is high; in fact, approximately 51% of students in the district receive free or reduced lunches. Although the poverty level is high, many of the seniors are planning to attend two and four-year colleges this fall.

While money is provided for some classroom supplies, there isn't money available for new books this year. I'm currently working with other 12th grade teachers to revamp the curriculum, and we would love to add new literature to the program.

Because of the diversity, poverty, and difficult decisions they face, I'd like to include literature to which my students can relate. My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult, a novel about a family facing a very difficult situation, is a perfect choice. I've never taught Picoult’s novel in the past, but I believe it has impressive literary merit and will provide an excellent learning experience for all. It has already won numerous awards that include Best Novel, Spanish or Bilingual - 2009 Latino Book Awards; Winner of the 2006-2007 Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Book Award in the high school division; and Winner of the Margaret Alexander Edwards Award (the Alex Award) given by the American Library Association. It has also been nominated for an IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

Your help will enable my students to read literature that relates to their lives and help them realize that they can face any obstacle.
