Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom begins with our morning routine. The children start off with reviewing calendar days, the days of the week, the weather outside, and seasons. The children then work on word work. Throughout the day, the children review topics in reading, math, and writing.

Our school is located in the heart of Queens, New York.

We are an elementary Community School that houses General Education and Special Education programs. Our student population is mostly composed of Hispanic youngsters. My students are General Education Kindergarten children. My students are mostly of Hispanic descent, whose primary language is Spanish. My classroom is made up of 14 boys and 11 girls. The parents of some of my students are immigrants and their children have not had any formal education. The reading levels in my classroom vary due to the diverse educational background my students possess. For the students without any formal education, their reading level is significantly delayed, however, some students can read on grade or above. My students enjoy looking at books and reading, however the materials I have in my classroom are old and falling part. Some of the books they love most have torn or missing pages and they often ask " Ms. Nunez, what happens there?"

My Project

My students need a leveled library in the classroom so they will have a wide variety of books to choose from to read according to their reading level. The students in my classroom will use the materials I am requesting as a support to improve their reading skills. A leveled library will address all the reading needs of my students. They will use the books to support reading and writing projects, as well as art projects. They will use the books during time at the activity centers to complete activities. The children enjoy listening to stories that are read aloud and shared reading is the highlight of their day. The books will be used to help my students learn how to answer reading comprehension questions and to teach them how to use learned strategies to complete a reading assignment.

Donations to my project will make a difference by helping Kindergarten students learn how to read.

A leveled library will address all of my students reading need on their level and not on an assumed reading level. Reading is one of the most important skills a child can acquire and I would like to give my students that opportunity.
