Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with nearly 45% of our students receiving free lunch. Many of my students participate in the "backpack program" which provides food for the students and their families over the weekend.
Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Fargo.
Over 9% of our students are English Language Learners.
Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, and Arabic.
As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. They are taught by a staff of teachers of whom 64% have graduate degrees. There is a multitude of teams and clubs that fit the needs of everyone.
My Project
I want to give my students choices in their desk style. More and more research shows that some kids need the freedom and option to be allowed to wiggle, fidget, or even stand at their desks. My classroom currently has traditional desks that have chairs connected to the desk itself. This is the only option available. The desks I would like to add to my room are designed with a shape that allows me to group them easily for collaborative work, but most importantly I get to choose the style of chair for each desk. I have three options included in my project: a wobble stool, and two different types of ball chairs.
My original project for alternative seating was slightly too ambitious and did not get funded.
I have reduced the scope of the project to ensure that I reach my goal this time around.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
