My Students

Our small K-6 public school is over 40 years old, close to two military bases and many of my wonderful students are deemed at-risk. All of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. As a result, we lack the resources and opportunities of other schools in our area.

I am the librarian in a small public school and I work with 455 kids---and yes, I admit I think they are wonderful.

My student population is racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. 20% of our students are in bilingual/ELL programs, Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, as well as Natives from rural Alaska.

Although my students represent the very best in America, they don't have the funds for school supplies, books or field trip fees, but they still want to learn.

My Project

Many of my beginning independent readers have a very difficult time finding something they want to read. Even though I coax them, they rarely check anything out of my library. This situation has to change! I firmly believe that students who don’t read, don’t succeed. Now, I have just heard about Branches books published by Scholastic. There are fourteen different series of Branches books. All Branches books have easy-to-read texts, simple plot lines, plenty of context cues, cliffhanger chapter endings, and purposeful illustrations that will help my kids learn to enjoy reading. I am asking for forty-five books from the four different Branches series.

The Branches books that I am requesting are books that my students want to read; they are books my students can read; they are books that will bolster their reading self-confidence and this will lead to an increased interest in reading.

My students want to be successful but they desperately need help. Every day they fall further behind. They are falling into an unfair lack-gap because our school lacks the budget to support all their needs. Please consider donating to this project.
