Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students have developed a love for reading. We enjoy reading aloud in class from assigned chapter books. We also participate in Sustained Silent Reading regularly, reading for pleasure. I often witness many of my students reading during lunch break. They simply love curling up in a corner to read their favorite books.

I am blown away listening to my students discuss and analyze characters and plots of a new favorite book.

They bring that same zeal into our seminars and reading circles.

We live in a world where many students cling to cell phones and tablets in their free time. So many of my students love being transported to other worlds or exploring the world they live in through books. I watch them as they navigate towards a graphic novel that explores the life of a famous person. Or, a science book that helps them explore a concept through a visual presentation.

I love that my 6th graders enjoy reading books. My goal for this project is to get a book into every one of my more than 80 student’s hands when they desire a book to read. These guys are great, they are hardworking, and are making more progress academically than they knew they could. I believe it starts with a book.
