My Students

My kids come in and look at the books I've spent years collecting/purchasing/and restocking. This is the first time I have had such a desire from my kids to read and perhaps it because I'm keeping the carrot in front of them. I want to honor and foster their thirst by building on my class library

New year and my kids are an amazing bunch.

I've kept the library closed while I organized a system to keep track of the donated and purchased books. And everyday my kids ask me to borrow books. My older students come visit and ask to borrow books. It is amazing to see kids eagerly search the walls for something to read when so many claim to not even enjoy reading. My school is in a low income high poverty segment of the Bronx. My kids have many gang experiences to share but not enough literary experiences to help them believe there is an alternative to the violence in their communities. I am hoping and confident these books will allow students to find an escape...find a hobby...and even find themselves in the pages they turn. They are a great bunch and I want to build on their literary skills through a great selection of books.

My Project

Independent reading is done three-5 times a week. Students will be able to check out books and practice reading strategies and systems to improve their comprehension, vocabulary and ultimately writing ability as well. Each independent reading session is coupled with a prompted writing response. The books will help students have a diverse selection of reading material to lose themselves in. They will be privy to worlds like their own and foreign to anything that they may have experienced before. They will find the beauty of escape through literature. My former students also still visit me and request/borrow books for their independent reading so by assisting this project more than just the 120 kids I serve are being aided. The entire school of 400-500 students will have a location to find a page turning life changing book.

My former student recently commented that he missed more than anything else how he could always find something new and interesting on my wall to read.

He thanked me for allowing him to discover he did enjoy reading. My project has the intention of aiding struggling readers, transforming reluctant readers, and providing the materials for avid readers. Everyone loves to read something. Hopefully together my students and I can find what would best fit them as individuals.
