Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students have a variety of talents starting with our amazing magnet programs, leadership, sports, all the way to Art. More than half of our students have either learning or physical disabilities and are English Learners. The majority of the students that I work with are of the minority groups and have low socioeconomic backgrounds.

I teach the visual arts to nearly 100 students and this year I received approximately $2 per student to purchase art supplies for the whole year. Although I am grateful for any amount of money that I receive, I strongly believe that my students deserve more in order for them to learn and express themselves through art.

My Project

Through the Intro To Art course, students should be able to experience and work a little bit with every medium, in this case with paper mache.

Art is the journey of a free soul -Alev Oguz.

Students will learn about the different animal symbols through Native American Art and are challenged to learn about their inner animal. An animal that represents who they are inside.

Then my students will create an animal mask out of paper mache. It will be three-dimensional, and painted with color using the primary colors to create the secondary, and tertiary colors. Students will benefit through this project as they have experience with molding and creating a three dimensional art piece out of something flat like newspaper and paper mache with their very own hands.
