My Students

In a test driven whirlwind of educational standards and academic rigor, students are often left without a chance to be creative, carefree and expressive. Mandated curriculum programs are often dry and lifeless. The arts allow children to express their natural enthusiasm for learning.

My students are curious, emotional, enthusiastic, intelligent, and beautiful.

They want to know all about the world they live in and thrive on opportunities to represent their knowledge and experiences in creative ways. They are highly motivated by just about any art medium. Art helps turn the seemingly mundane topics required in education into exciting adventures. Our school opened just five years ago, and we have been working hard to include the arts into our everyday lives. I have seen the most troubled and uninspired children come to life when given the opportunity to create and express themselves. Many of our children struggle with academics, yet when given the chance to be creative, they seem suddenly willing to give it their all to learn about our topic, knowing that fun will be woven into the lessons.

My Project

The materials I am requesting include paint, colorful paper, and glue. With basic materials, and the recycled materials we collect throughout the year, we are able to transform our classrooms into different countries for our school-wide "Around the World" Social Studies fair, make 3-D maps of our city, create beautiful art for books that we write, and liven up Math and Science projects. My students love when they see me preparing art materials for the day. Their little faces light up, and they immediately become helpful and inspired. I use art as a cooperative learning experience that integrates all areas of learning. When creating a "tropical paradise", children need to estimate how much paper they need to create one palm tree. They have to figure out who is a good leader, writer, painter . . . and take on roles that contribute to the project. They learn how to communicate, problem solve, share, and most of all use their imaginations!

As school budgets get cut and schools have to be careful how they use their resources, materials are hard to come by.

Your support will help ensure that our children will have opportunities to thrive and create. If you could see the amazing fair we have in June, you would agree that it's worth the effort and money. Every classroom in our school is magically turned into a country from every part of the world. My second grade children will be ecstatic and children next year will also benefit.
