Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In this poverty stricken neighborhood, few things excite and engage my students when it comes to academics, let alone reading. They have extremely limited to no access to technology at home and look at our school as a way to become successful. In our technologically advanced world, I want my students to be competitive with their peers by learning how to use technology on their own and engaging with fun, interactive, and targeted programs.

The students in my first grade class live in an extremely poor neighborhood of the Bronx with little to no resources.

While they are bright, sensitive children, they are faced with many challenges as a result of the home environments from which they come. My class consists of general education, English Language learners, and special needs students. The children in my class have very little academic support at home. In our Title I school, it is difficult for parents to buy food, clothing, and supplies for their children, let alone books.

My Project

In the past year our school has piloted a STEM program which allows our students to learn about the world around them using technology. Currently however, my first graders are unable to participate in this program. I want my students to begin using technology to open their minds to the world around them and engage with learning in a fun way! Our school has access to two computer programs called "RAZKids" and "iReady". Each of these is a program where each child has a individual account that is targeted to that particular child's needs. "RAZKids" gives children the opportunity to read books at their level, record themselves, and answer questions about the books they read! "iReady" assesses where the students are in both math and literacy and based on these assessments, creates individualized lessons that supports growth in these areas of weakness. Additionally, my students want to begin publishing their stories like real writers do by typing them up and printing them! A computer would really help us feel like writers!

In order for my first graders to work within these targeted programs each week, we need a computer and key card in our classroom for them to learn and work!

Because many of our families do not have books at home or people with whom they can read, access to these programs would give them books at their fingertips! Because both programs targets each individual child, each feels successful working at his or her own academic level. The best part is that the children LOVE learning using these programs!
