My Students

My students are from all over the world! They are kind, motivated and eager to learn English. The majority of my students are new to the country and are adjusting to a new culture. We celebrate our cultural differences everyday in our classroom. We share our traditions, celebrations and experiences with one another. Some of my students have little experience of school in their native countries or are illiterate in their native language. This makes it difficult to teach the 6th grade curriculum using grade level resources.

It has become increasingly difficult to attain resources that reflect the varied levels of my students.

I am constantly searching the internet for engaging activities that target language acquisition. I print out articles that offer 3 different lexiles so that all my students can participate in the same lesson and not feel isolated. Sometimes I need to add translations or adjust a worksheet at a moments notice. Unfortunately, I don't have my own functional printer or copy machine. I want to make sure all my students, regardless of their academic or language level feels proud, capable, productive and included in all my lessons.

My Project

Most of my students don't speak English and are illiterate in their first language. This makes it very difficult to find resources to not only help them learn and acquire language but it also has to be age appropriate. If our class had a functional printer/copier I could create worksheets with translations at a moments notice. I could print out engaging activities immediately! Plus my students could type up and print out their work using google translate! My students are incredible human beings and deserve my very best effort as an educator. In a digital world, where information is at our fingertips, please help me provide them with all the resources that are available to them!
