This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are truly extraordinary Queens NYC elementary and middle school students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. They are often the only DHH kids in a typically noisy classroom, and they require access to the curriculum. I use an iPad to caption spoken language and to insert visuals into lessons when the kids are learning new vocabulary and new concepts during reading passages in science class, ELA, and social studies. Many of my DHH students are also English language learners so the use of visuals and captions is critical!

We use the Apple Pencil to write on the iPad screen with apps like Math Learning Center, which has interactive features like a number line, whiteboard, and fraction tiles.

I can upload PDF documents into the Notability app, then the students can use the Apple Pencil to write directly on the screen. This is a fantastic method for collecting student work and data! My students are so visual and tech-savvy! As they get older, they can handle their own Hearing Assistive Technology and sync it via Bluetooth with an iPad. They really knock my socks off with how smart they are, and how proud they are to demonstrate their own self-advocacy skills!
