Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Perhaps it can best be summarized by stating that I work in title one classroom in the Bronx that is under supplied. The students in my third grade class need exposure to non fiction pieces of work in preparation for the state exams that they will be taking.

The light in their eyes when they come across non fiction books, especially animal books, is UNBELIEVABLE! I want to nurture and hone in on this particular interest. Unfortunately, our school cannot afford to buy more books and the school library is not equipped to handle such a large student body (1600).

The nonfiction books will be an asset in a school that has no resources. Students will have the opportunity to browse through their books and entertain each other with facts about the animals that interest them the most. Students can use the books to create research projects about their nonfiction topics, as well. They would be able to use the markers, scissors, and other art supplies to create their projects.

If in fact our students are the future, then what better way to open their minds to the wonders of the world than through non fiction exploration. Students cannot save the future unless they are aware of the surroundings and creatures that they depend upon for survival.
