Music plays a big part in my own childhood and school memories. I remember singing "I've Got the Whole World in my Hands" in my first grade classroom as a student. I recall painting in high school art class with Paul Simon crooning away in the background. I believe that music is vital, and yet lacking, in many classrooms. It's enjoyable and particularly important for students who are musically intelligent. In my inner-city high-poverty school, students do not begin to have music classes until the 3rd grade, so any music education they receive before then comes from me. As a teacher in a first grade classroom, I love to play music whenever I get the chance. If I can find a song that ties in with our math, science, language arts, or social studies lessons, I play it. We have songs about telling time, the parts of a plant, vowels, the water cycle, rhyming, geography, invertebrates, and so on. We play music for our classroom parties and during art lessons. Students choose good morning and good-bye songs. I have carefully chosen Cd's that will contribute to our classroom lessons and atmosphere. My classroom typically has students whose families come from at least seven different countries, so I have chosen many Cd's that will bring songs from around the world to us. When we read a story about the Caribbean, I will have a CD of music from that part of the world that will add another dimension to the story. The same goes for the story we read about a boy who immigrates to the U.S. from Japan. One of my goals is to find the songs that are particularly pertinent for what we study and transcribe them onto giant posters. This way, the students can practice their reading skills along with rhythm, beat, tone, pitch, etc. I always share my materials with other teachers, so your contribution will be reaching even more students! The best part is that the Cd's will last for years to come. Thank you for your support!
