Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am fortunate to work in this beautiful community of Jackson Heights, Queens. We have a diverse population of students with equally diverse needs. We teach a large immigrant population with families from Central and South America as well as Asia. Almost 20% of our school is made up of English Language Learners. We are a Barrier Free School, which means that we provide access to children with disabilities, including students with severe cognitive, medical and emotional needs. We are a Title I school in need of financial assistance due to our high numbers of children from low-income families.

My Project

We have a responsibility to focus as much on a student's emotional well being as their academic well being. Incorporating mindfulness and yoga practices into our day can help kids to explore a wide range of emotions, to focus, self regulate, to respond rather than react and develop a sense of self awareness. Instruments, such as the ukelele, will help younger children gain access to these practices in a way that is fun, exciting, creative and inspiring. Singing and strumming through directions, rather than talking at kids, will help with motivation and engagement. Imagine the cool beats and rhythms students can create with the egg shakers and drums, while they move and flow through yoga poses. The soft sound of the singing bowl will help with focus and stillness. We know that in order for children to have access to what we are teaching them, they need to present, feel safe, and be seen and heard. Music, mindfulness and yoga will help our students to explore these practices in a unique way.
