My Students

Ask anyone in the area and they’ll tell you, “They always puts on a great show.” Year after year, music teachers commend our school for the performances we put on. Whether it’s our standing-room-only winter program, our after school family festivals, our Little Kids Rock program or our talent show, Utah never fails to showcase the talent of our awesome kids.

This is all the more amazing when you consider our school’s lack of resources.

We lack the facilities and equipment afforded to other schools. We do not have a gym, an adequate field nor locker rooms for our students. Nonetheless, we have successfully competed against, and oftentimes outperformed surrounding schools. Although we have made great strides, particularly in academic achievement, a big focus and major highlight for our kids has always been our music program.

In terms of our makeup, 99% of our students live below the poverty line, we are a struggling inner-city school. Some of our challenges include 100% participation in the free or reduced meal program (a qualification due to our high poverty), a neighborhood with a high crime level and an above average drop-out rate just to name a few obstacles.

My Project

A key focus for us, an overarching theme is making the arts fun while simultaneously helping students see the connection between an appreciation for the arts and a healthy respect for one's own school and community. We strive to create an effective program for our students, willing to go to any lengths to provide the best opportunities for them. We want our kids to not only know what the performing arts are, but also to know how enjoyable they can be and how they can be incorporated into their everyday lives. In essence, we would like to enhance both the student performers’ and the audience’s experience with the use of better, more dynamic equipment. We have had to improvise in many ways to make things work for our performances and school-wide special events.

Unfortunately, we have always had to make due with meager resources.

We currently have a great need for some upgrades to some of our sound equipment. We can no longer use the old American Audio DJ mixer we have always used. The knobs on this mixer do not work well, not to mention, it limits us to two microphones. This is a recurring problem particularly with our Little Kids Rock program given the size of the band and their practice needs. We believe wholeheartedly that better, more adequate equipment will make for better practice sessions and invariably, better events. A new sound mixer will allow us to better fine tune, capture and share their sound. To remedy this situation, we have often had to rent sound mixers, microphone cables, as well as other equipment. The following upgrade request would certainly meet the needs and enrich our ever-growing school-wide performances and events.
