Children with Autism learn best using ALL of their senses. I teach Children with Autism in a self contained special education school. The children in my class are all young boys, all non-verbal, and they all react with joy to ALL THINGS MUSICAL!!!

The children in my class learn well when they are doing what they love and when they are engaged in an activity. Much of the academics that I teach are taught utilizing an approach that almost always involves academics set to music. It is an enjoyable, viable way to teach children on the autism spectrum. In addition to learning academics, music and movement are wonderful components of the school day. Music is intrinsically motivating and the big body movements of dancing and moving to rhythm are wonderful to keep the children focused and engaged with other people in their world. It is something that all of us can share and enjoy. I use my CD player so much that I have already been through 2 of my own and the CD player I am currently using works sporadically...it is time for a new one. The children in my class participated in a special music residency and they LOVED using the ribbon wands that the teaching artist used with them.

What I need for the children in my class is a CD/cassette player, various types of colorful ribbon wands to use for movement activities, and a CD which has music and movement activities to use specifically with the ribbon wands.

If you choose to help us, you will be providing hours of joy and free expression for children who are so often trapped in their own bodies and frequently their own worlds. Expression, engagement, energy , and belonging, are powerful things....and these are some of the benefits of the supplies you will be providing.
